Minor Original Driver License – Never Licensed Before
1 – WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
Before applying for your first-time Utah driver license you will need to:
Step 1: Apply for your Utah learner permit.
Step 2: Complete the Traffic Safety and Trends exam and pass with 100%. Do not take this exam until you have been issued your learner permit (you need your learner permit number to register for the exam.)
Step 3: After you have met the learner permit requirements, you can schedule your driving skills test or license appointment below when you are at least 16 years old.
- Understand the minor/teen driver restrictions that are in place for certain ages.
2 – WHAT IS THE PROCESS
- Fill out an online application and schedule an appointment to visit a driver license office.
- When you arrive for your scheduled appointment, have your confirmation number ready to check in, and then you will take a photo.
- After your photo, you will have a seat; when your number is called, you will present your documents to the examiner, take an eye test, and pay the non-refundable fee of $39.00.
- If any test is required, you will take it at this time.
3 – WHAT YOU NEED TO BRING TO YOUR APPOINTMENT
- Bring your learner permit if you have it (no other documents are required if already verified when applying for your learner permit.)
- If documents weren’t already verified:
- Bring proof of identity (name and date of birth.)
- Bring your social security card.
- Bring two (2) documents providing proof of Utah address.
- Bring a parent/legal guardian to sign for financial responsibility and sign off on the 40 hours of practice driving (10 hours after sunset) for age 17 and under.
- If you completed driver education, the information will be electronically submitted to the Driver License Division.
Has Your Name Changed
If the name on your driver license or identity card is different than the name on your identity document (e.g., birth certificate, amended birth certificate, or passport), it must be accompanied by legal documentation authorizing the name change. These include a certified state marriage certificate, divorce decree, updated passport, amended birth certificate, adoption paperwork, citizenship/naturalization certificate, or court documents indicating the name change sealed by the court.
Parents Signing for Financial Responsibility
At any time, the parent or legal guardian who signed for financial responsibility on the minor’s application can withdraw their signature until the minor is 18 years of age and for any reason. This action would invalidate the driver license, and the minor could reapply when they reach the age of 18 or if the parent/legal guardian signed a new application. There would be a licensing fee and a written knowledge test to reapply.
4 – COMPLETE THE APPLICATION AND SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT
5 – WHEN DO I GET MY LICENSE
- A temporary license with a photo will be issued on the same day.
- The completed license with a 5-year expiration date will be mailed to you in approximately 4-6 weeks.
Note: By law, you may not possess more than one REAL ID compliant certificate at a time (e.g., a Utah driver license and a Colorado ID.)
