Renew Minor Driver License

1 – WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • You can renew your Utah license six (6) months before the expiration date.
  • You can apply to renew your Utah license early if you provide proof of your absence from the state during the six (6) month period prior to the expiration date of your license.
  • If you renew before your 21st birthday, your license will still show minor; however, it will still be good for eight (8) years.  You would not be issued an “adult” driver license until on or after your 21st birthday.
Renew Online

You can renew your Utah driver license online if you have received a renewal letter by mail with a pin number.  If you never received the letter or misplaced the letter, call Customer Service at 801.965.4437 for the pin number.  To begin the online renewal process, click here.

  • If you are required to have your eyes examined for your online renewal, please click here to schedule an appointment for your eye exam at the Driver License Division.
Office Renewal

If you renewed your Utah driver license online during the last renewal cycle, you will be required to come in this time for the renewal and take a new photo.

If you have received more than four (4) citations in five (5) years, have been suspended or revoked, or your license has been expired for more than six (6) months, you will be required to appear in person for your renewal and complete a 25-question open-book written knowledge test.

2 – WHAT IS THE PROCESS

  • Fill out an online application and schedule an appointment to visit a driver license office.
  • When you arrive for your scheduled appointment, have your confirmation number ready to check in, and then you will take a photo.
  • After your photo, you will have a seat; when your number is called, you will present your documents to the examiner, take an eye test, and pay the non-refundable fee of $52.00 ($27.00 for 65 and older.)
  • If required (because of expiration, suspensions, or multiple citations), you will then take the written knowledge test.

3 – WHAT YOU NEED TO BRING TO YOUR APPOINTMENT

  • Bring your current Utah driver license.
  • Bring two (2) documents providing proof of your Utah address if you have moved from the last known address on your Utah driver license.  You can avoid providing proof if you submit your address change online prior to your scheduled appointment.
Has Your Name Changed

If the name on your driver license or identity card is different than the name on your identity document (e.g., birth certificate, amended birth certificate, or passport), it must be accompanied by legal documentation authorizing the name change.   These include a certified state marriage certificate, divorce decree, updated passport, amended birth certificate, adoption paperwork, citizenship/naturalization certificate, or court documents indicating the name change sealed by the court.

4 – COMPLETE THE APPLICATION AND SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT

5 – WHEN DO I GET MY LICENSE

  • A temporary license with a photo will be issued on the same day.
  • The completed license with an 8-year expiration date will be mailed to you in approximately 4-6 weeks.

Note: By law, you may not possess more than one REAL ID compliant certificate at a time (e.g., a Utah driver license and a Colorado ID.)
