Renew Minor Limited-Term Commercial Driver License (CDL)

1 – WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • You can renew your Utah limited-term commercial driver license six (6) months before the expiration date.
  • Online renewal is not an option for a limited-term CDL.
  • If you renew before your 21st birthday, your limited-term CDL will still show minor.  You would not be issued an “adult” driver license until on or after your 21st birthday.
  • If you are an active duty military service member, your commercial limited-term driver license will expire 90 days after discharge.  Discharge documentation is required when renewing.
Testing

If your commercial limited-term driver license has been expired for more than six (6) months, you will be required to take all CDL written knowledge and driving skills tests to renew.

A 25-question open-book regular driver license (Class D) written knowledge test may be required if you have had more than one (1) citation in the past year, have been suspended or revoked, or your limited-term driver license has been expired more than six (6) months.

2 – WHAT IS THE PROCESS

  • Fill out an online application and schedule an appointment to visit a CDL driver license office.
  • When you arrive for your scheduled appointment, have your confirmation number ready to check in, and then you will take a photo.
  • After your photo, you will have a seat; when your number is called, you will present your documents to the examiner, take an eye test, and pay the non-refundable fee of $52.00, plus each endorsement is $9.00; motorcycle endorsement is $18.00.
  • If required (because of expiration, suspensions, or multiple citations), you will then take your written knowledge test.

3 – WHAT YOU NEED TO BRING TO YOUR APPOINTMENT

  • Bring your current Utah limited-term commercial driver license. 
  • Bring your DOT card to be verified.
  • Bring your CDL medical self-certification form.
  • Bring your current lawful presence identity document.

  • Bring two (2) documents providing proof of your Utah address if you have moved from the last known address on your Utah limited-term CDL.  Federal regulations require that your current address be printed on your limited-term commercial driver license.
Has Your Name Changed

If the name from your driver license or identity card is different than the name on your identity document (e.g., birth certificate or passport), it must be accompanied by legal documentation authorizing the name change.  These include a certified state marriage certificate, divorce decree, updated passport, amended birth certificate, adoption paperwork, citizenship/naturalization certificate, or court documents indicating the name change sealed by the court.

4 – COMPLETE THE APPLICATION AND SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT

Currently, our Farmington, Logan, and Tooele offices do not process CDL’s.

5 – WHEN DO I GET MY LICENSE

  • A temporary license with a photo will be issued on the same day.  
  • The completed limited-term CDL will have an expiration date of your legal presence document or five (5) years, whichever is sooner; or 1-year from the date of issuance if there is no expiration date, and will be mailed to you in approximately 4-6 weeks.

Note: By law, you may not possess more than one REAL ID compliant certificate at a time (e.g., a Utah driver license and a Colorado ID.)
