CDL Third-Party Tester Process
Tester
A company that sponsors examiners to administer the CDL driving skills test.
Examiners
Are individual employees who work for a tester company.
Program
Testers are essential in the CDL program for the state of Utah.
If you are interested in applying to be a part of the CDL Third-Party Tester Program, the following steps should be completed:
- Step 1: Read, understand, and agree to the following regulations:
- Step 2: Contact a Program Coordinator in the CDL Section at 801.965.4125 to obtain an application packet, submit accompanying documentation, and ask any questions related to the Third-Party Program.
- Step 3: Submit the required application packet. Please note that once submitted, it may take up to 60 days to review the application packet for accuracy and provide feedback on any necessary changes.
- Valid Commercial Driver License with Class and/or Endorsement(s) you intend to administer test for;
- Three years of valid driving experience;
- Physical strength & agility to stand, crouch, walk for extended periods of time, and the ability to enter and exit commercial motor vehicles (CMVs);
- Pass a Criminal Background check per 49 CFR 384.228(h) and R708-21;
- Two consecutive years of business license history in Utah;
- Surety Bond; and
- Satellite map/image of the proposed testing site and any appropriate land use agreements.
- Step 4: Fees
- $100 Tester Application
- $30 Examiner Application (per examiner)
- $32 Background Check fee (per applicant)
After approval, all applicants intending to administer CDL Skills Tests will be required to attend a certification course at Salt Lake Community College. Please note that Salt Lake Community College charges a separate fee for the certification course.
