Medical Standards for Drivers

The mission of the division is to license and regulate drivers in Utah and promote public safety.  To align with our mission, the Driver License Division has medical guidelines and standards in place to gauge how a medical condition may affect a person's ability to drive safely.

Utah residents who fill out an application for driving privilege are asked a series of medical questions and requested to take an eye test.  If there is a medical or vision condition, you would need to visit your vision or health care professional and have the applicable form completed functional ability evaluation -- visual examination.

Your health care professional will use their knowledge of your condition and how it may affect your ability to drive safely, along with the medical guidelines and standards to assist them in completing the form(s).  The medical guidelines and standards contain the medical and vision standards for Utah drivers.  They were created by a public body of health care professionals called the Utah Medical Advisory Board.

Based upon a completed functional ability evaluation and visual examination form, the Driver License Division may issue a license with or without limitations.
