CDL Written Knowledge Test

All written knowledge questions are based on information in the commercial driver license manual.

Closed-Book

All commercial driver license tests are closed-book, multiple-choice questions, and require 80% to pass.

English Only

All CDL tests are administered in English only; the use of translation materials is strictly prohibited.

There are different written knowledge tests depending on the class of CDL you are applying for and the endorsements needed. Three tests make up the core testing for a CDL. These tests are included in the $52.00 license application fee. Each test may be taken up to two times before a second test fee of $26.00 will be required. Taking endorsement tests is optional. Endorsement fees are $9.00 for two attempts on written knowledge tests. An additional two test attempts are $9.00.

Once you have passed all written knowledge tests required for your license class and endorsements, you will receive a permit for 180 days. Click the link if you are ready to fill out the driver license application and schedule an appointment to obtain your CDL.

This test is optional and can be taken by applicants for a Class A or B CDL. This test is required if planning on driving a vehicle equipped with air brakes. If the written knowledge test is not taken and the driving skills test is not completed in an air brake-equipped vehicle, an "L" restriction will be placed on the license, restricting the applicant from driving a CMV not equipped with air brakes.

The air brake written knowledge test is 25 questions.

On September 29, 2025, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) published an interim final rule requiring states to pause the issuance of limited-term Commercial Driver's Licenses (CDLs) until they comply with the new rules and regulations. The State of Utah resumed issuing non-domiciled licenses on November 3, 2025.
