Driver Education Information for 15-18 Year Olds
Driver education is required to apply for a Utah driver license.
Step 1: Apply for your learner permit.
Step 2: Enroll and complete a driver education course (see course options below.)
Step 3: After you have completed your driver education course and the required practice driving hours, you will take the driving skills test.
Permit holding time requirements
If you are 15-17 years old, you must hold the learner permit for six (6) months before you can apply for your Utah license. Once you turn 18, you are not required to hold the learner permit for six (6) months and can apply for your Utah license.
Driver Education Course Options
You have three (3) options when choosing where to complete a driver education course:
- Option 1: Local high school
- Option 2: Commercial/private school
- Option 3: Approved online/home study
-
Must use DLD-approved course/provider
- Be aware that many online driver education courses are offered on the internet.
- These courses may provide driver education or practice testing; however, they have not been approved by the Driver License Division and cannot be accepted as proof of driver education completion.
Certificate submitted electronically
- Your driver education course certificate will be submitted electronically to the Driver License Division.
- If you are given a physical course completion certificate, it must be on letterhead or have a state-approved seal and should not be mistaken as a license to drive.
Driver Education Hours Information
- Classroom instruction:
- High school - 27 hours; or
- Commercial/private school - 18 hours; or
- Utah-approved online/home study - 30 hours
- Behind-the-wheel instruction - 6 hours
- Observation - 6 hours (Utah state law does not require; however, the school or business can decide to implement and keep observation as part of their program. Utah high schools require observation as part of their curriculum.)
Out-of-state driver education
- Out-of-state driver education course completion certificates must meet Utah's required hours and this form must be completed.
- If additional training is needed, you may make up the remaining hours at an approved Utah driving school (see course options above.) Out-of-state online or home study course certificates will not be accepted.
