Written Knowledge Tests

An applicant can renew the limited-term driver license for up to five years without taking the written knowledge test in English.  If language assistance is needed, a certified Interpreter, or kiosk in the native language can be used.  Upon the second renewal of the limited-term driver license, the applicant must pass the written knowledge test in English, or no driving privileges would be issued.

    • The completed limited-term license will be mailed to you in approximately 4-6 weeks and will have an expiration date of your lawful presence or five years, whichever is sooner.  If there is no expiration date on your lawful presence documents, the expiration date of the limited-term license will be one year from the date of issuance.
    • If you renew before your 21st birthday, the limited-term license will be labeled minor.  The system will not label it adult until the day of or after your 21st birthday.
    • Attention: By law, you may not possess more than one REAL ID-compliant certificate at a time (e.g., a Utah license and a Colorado ID.)
