Renewal Period

You can renew your Utah driver license up to six months prior to its expiration date.

Renew Online

You should receive a letter with a PIN number 90 days before expiration, if you are eligible to Renew Online.

Written Knowledge Test

May be required to pass a 25-question open-book test.

STEPS

  1. Gather Your Documents For Your Driver License Renewal:

    • Current Utah driver license.
    • Address verification (2) if you have moved from your last known address on file.
      • If you submit your address change online prior to scheduling your appointment, address verification will not be required.

  2. Submit Application and Schedule Appointment:

    • If ineligible to renew online, you will need to schedule an appointment to visit a Driver License office to complete the process of renewing your Utah driver license.  If you have misplaced the renewal letter that was mailed to you, please call customer service to obtain your PIN number at 801.965.4437 or toll-free at 888.353.4224.  Reasons you may not be eligible to renew online:
      • Citations, suspensions, or revocations.
      • You renewed online the last time.
      • Your license has been expired for more than one year.
      • Indication of medical impairment.
      • Another state has put a hold on your license.

  3. Arrive For Your Appointment:

    • Have your appointment confirmation number ready to check in at the front desk.
    • Take a photo.
    • Take a number.
    • Present documents to the examiner.
    • Complete the eye test.
    • Pay the non-refundable fee of $52.00 (65 and older $27.00.)
    • If required because of suspensions, expired more than one year, or multiple citations, you will take the written knowledge test.

  4. When Do I Get My Driver License?

    • A temporary license will be issued on the same day.
    • The completed license will be mailed to you in approximately 4-6 weeks and will have an expiration date of eight years.
    • If you renew before your 21st birthday, the license will be labeled minor.  The system will not label it adult until the day of or after your 21st birthday.
    5. Attention: By law, you may not possess more than one REAL ID-compliant certificate at a time (e.g., a Utah license and a Colorado ID.)
