Motorcycle Course Information and Providers

Completing and passing an approved motorcycle safety course can waive the driving skills test at the Driver License Division.

The motorcycle safety course can be used to waive the skills test at the DLD if you present a completion card within 6 months of course completion.

Beginning Rider Course (BRC) Details

The Beginning Rider Course (BRC) is a 15-hour course, with 10 hours dedicated to on-motorcycle training. Schools provide students with motorcycles (typically 150cc and 250cc) and helmets. Here's what you can expect at the BRC.

Experienced Rider Course (ERC) Details

The Experienced Rider Course (ERC) is a 5-hour course designed for riders with recent motorcycle riding experience (over 2000 miles). In the ERC, you may have the opportunity to be tested on your own motorcycle. If you successfully complete the riding skills test in the ERC, you will receive a riding skills test waiver card.

Tiered Motorcycle Licensing Based on Engine Size and Three-Wheeled Motorcycle Information

You will be licensed to ride motorcycles based on the engine size of the motorcycle you ride to complete the rider skills test. This is true for the test whether you take it at a DLD office or as part of an MSF course.

  • If you test on a motorcycle/scooter 90 cc or less, you will be restricted to riding motorcycles/scooters 90 cc or less.
  • If you test on a motorcycle/scooter 249 cc or less, you will be restricted to riding motorcycles/scooters 249 cc or less.
  • If you test on a motorcycle/scooter 649 cc or less, you will be restricted to riding motorcycles/scooters 649 cc or less.
  • If you test on a motorcycle/scooter larger than 650 cc, you will not be restricted, you will be authorized to ride any size motorcycle/scooter.
  • If you are tested on a three-wheeled motorcycle, you will have a restriction on your license, allowing you only to ride three-wheeled motorcycles.  This includes two (2) wheels on the front or the rear of the motorcycle.
