Renew CDL - Not US Citizen

What you need to know

Renewal information:

  • You can renew your Utah commercial driver license six (6) months before the expiration date.
  • Online renewal is not an option.
  • You can apply to renew your Utah CDL early if you provide proof of your absence from the state during the six (6) month period prior to the expiration date of your license.
  • If you renew before your 21st birthday, your license will still show minor; however, it will still be good for five (5) years.  You would not be issued an "adult" driver license until on or after your 21st birthday.
  • If you are an active duty military service member, your CDL will expire 90 days after discharge.  Discharge documentation is required when renewing.
  • If your commercial driver license has been expired for more than six (6) months, you will be required to take all CDL written knowledge and driving skills tests to renew.

  • A 25-question open-book regular driver license (Class D) written knowledge test may be required if you have had more than four (4) citations in the past five (5) years, suspension or revocation in the past five (5) years, or your license has been expired more than six (6) months.

  • The written knowledge test for school bus (S) and hazardous materials (H) endorsements must be completed at each renewal of the license.
