Commercial Driver License (CDL) Written Knowledge Test
There are different written knowledge tests depending on the class of CDL you are applying for and the endorsements needed. All CDL written knowledge tests are closed book, multiple-choice questions and must be passed with 80% or better. All CDL written knowledge tests are administered in English only, and the use of any translation materials is prohibited.
Three (3) tests make up the core testing for a CDL. These tests are included in the $52.00 license application fee. Each test may be taken up to two (2) times before a second test fee of $26.00 will be required. Taking endorsement tests is optional. Endorsement fees are $9.00 for two (2) attempts on written knowledge tests. Additional two (2) test attempts are $9.00.

General Written Knowledge Test
This test is taken by all applicants applying for a Class A, B, and C CDL. It encompasses general trucking knowledge, driving safety, transporting cargo, and how to perform a pre-trip inspection.
The general written knowledge test is 50 questions. Once the general written knowledge test is passed, a commercial learner permit (CLP) will be issued for six (6) months.
Combination Test
This test is only taken by those applying for a Class A CDL. It involves details between a combination vehicle, such as a tractor and trailer. The combination test is 30 questions.
Air Brakes Test
This test is optional and can be taken by applicants for a Class A, B, or C CDL. This test is required if planning on driving a vehicle equipped with air brakes. If the written knowledge test is not taken and the driving skills test is not complete in an air brake-equipped vehicle, an “L” restriction will be placed on the license, restricting the applicant from driving a CMV not equipped with air brakes.
The air brake written knowledge test is 25 questions.
