What you need to know

Limited Term License Renewal Information

  • Renew up to 6 months early before it expires.
  • Online renewal is NOT available.
  • Under 21?
    • Renewing before 21 keeps the minor label on your license.
    • An adult license can be issued on or after your 21st birthday.
  • Written test required if:
    • More than one citation in a year.
    • License was suspended, revoked, or expired over 6 months.

    Test translation and language information for refugee/asylee/covered humanitarian (Afghan) parolee:

    • Renewal without testing in English: You can renew your limited-term driver license for up to five years without taking the written knowledge test in English.

    • Language Assistance: If you need to take the test, you can use a certified interpreter or a kiosk in your native language.

    • Second Renewal Requirements: On your second renewal, you must pass the written knowledge test in English.

    • Failure to Pass: If you do not pass the English test, you will not be issued driving privileges.

    2. Gather your documents - must bring to appointment

    3. At your appointment

      • Have your confirmation number ready to check-in
      • Have photo taken
      • Present documents
      • Pass eye test
      • Pay the non-refundable fee of $52.00 ($27.00 for 65 and older)
      • If required (because of expiration, suspensions, or multiple citations), you will then take the written knowledge test.

    When do I get my limited-term license?

    • A temporary limited-term license with a photo will be issued on the same day.
    • The completed limited-term will have an expiration date of your legal presence document or five (5) years, whichever is sooner, or 1-year from the date of issuance if there is no expiration date, and will be mailed to you in approximately 6-8 weeks.
